— The hotel
Gertrude’s Residence
First Impressions
Gertrude’s Residence sits on a quiet tree-lined street in Riga‘s Art Nouveau district, and honestly, you might walk right past it if you’re not paying attention. The entrance is understated in that effortlessly European way — no flashy signs or doormen, just a simple brass plaque and heavy wooden doors that open to reveal something quite special inside. It’s the kind of place that feels more like stepping into a well-appointed private home than checking into a hotel.
The Neighborhood
Ģertrūdes street is actually one of my favorite areas in the city — you’re right in the heart of the Art Nouveau quarter where locals still live and work. There’s a small café called Folkklubs just around the corner that serves proper Latvian coffee, and you can walk to the Central Market in about ten minutes (though I’d recommend taking the longer route through Kronvalda Park). The four-star rating makes sense here because while it’s polished, it doesn’t feel stuffy or overly formal like some of the bigger chain hotels closer to Old Town.
The Space
My room had these gorgeous high ceilings and original hardwood floors that creaked just enough to remind you you’re in a historic building. The furnishings strike this nice balance between modern comfort and period charm — think clean lines but with warm wood accents and actual artwork on the walls, not hotel prints. What I really appreciated was the kitchenette setup; it’s compact but functional, with a proper coffee machine and enough space to prepare simple meals if you want to shop at the market.
Daily Rhythms
Breakfast happens in this cozy ground-floor space that doubles as a common area, and it’s where you realize this place attracts a certain type of traveler — usually Europeans on extended stays or Americans who’ve done their homework. The spread isn’t huge, but everything’s quality: local breads, good cheese, fresh fruit, and they’ll make you eggs however you like them. The staff here actually knows guests’ names, which you don’t always get even at much pricier places.
Why Guests Love It
You know what really sets this place apart? It’s that sweet spot between independence and service. You get your own space to spread out — some units are more like small apartments than hotel rooms — but there’s always someone at the front desk who can point you toward that underground jazz club or help arrange parking if you’re driving. The 8.4 rating reflects exactly what you experience: solid, comfortable, unpretentious, and genuinely welcoming. Plus, you’ll probably end up chatting with interesting people in the breakfast room, which doesn’t happen at the big chains.
