— The hotel
Riga Park View Old town
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Riga Park View Old town on Kalēju iela, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little gem absolutely floored me.
The location is what really makes this place shine. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the House of the Blackheads (which, if you haven’t seen it lit up at night, you’re missing out), and the cobblestone streets of Old Town are right at your doorstep. I mean, you can hear the gentle hum of Doma laukums square in the evening – not loud enough to keep you awake, but just enough to remind you that you’re in the heart of one of Europe’s most beautiful medieval centers. The staff actually seemed to know their stuff too, which is refreshing. When I asked about getting to the Central Market early to beat the crowds, the front desk guy didn’t just point me in a direction – he told me which tram to take and mentioned that the fish vendors have the best deals before 9 AM.
What really got me was the attention to detail in the rooms. Sure, it’s not going to win any design awards, but everything just… works. The beds are properly comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), the shower has decent water pressure, and – this might sound weird – but the windows actually open properly, which is surprisingly rare in older buildings around here. You can smell the bakery on the corner in the morning, and honestly, it’s better than any alarm clock. The whole building has this lived-in feel that makes you want to settle in for more than just a night or two. I ended up staying an extra day just because checking out felt like leaving a friend’s place.
Here’s the thing though – parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving. The old town streets weren’t exactly designed for modern cars, but there’s a decent lot about a five-minute walk away, and the hotel folks will point you in the right direction. During summer, this area gets pretty bustling with tourists, but somehow the hotel maintains this calm, almost residential vibe. Maybe it’s because it’s tucked just enough off the main tourist drag that you feel like you’ve discovered something special. I’ve stayed at pricier places in Riga that felt more like temporary pit stops, but this place – it actually felt like being in Latvia, not just passing through it. If you want to experience Riga’s old town without the tourist trap feeling, and you appreciate a place that does the basics really, really well, you’ll probably love it here as much as I did.
