Marias Apartment
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw “Marias Apartment” on Marijas iela, I wasn’t expecting much. The address alone had me doing a double-take (yeah, it’s literally Maria’s apartment on Maria’s street – someone had a sense of humor or really good timing). But walking into this place actually surprised me in the best way possible.
The thing about staying here is that you’re right in the heart of Rīga’s Old Town, but on one of those quieter side streets that most tourists just walk past without noticing. I mean, you’re maybe three minutes from the Town Hall Square, but the street itself stays pretty peaceful – even during those crazy White Nights when the whole city seems to be partying until dawn. The building has that classic Latvian charm, you know what I mean? Those thick walls that keep things surprisingly quiet, and Maria (yes, there’s actually a Maria) knows her stuff when it comes to making travelers feel at home. Check-in was refreshingly simple – none of that corporate hotel nonsense, just genuine hospitality.
What really got me was the attention to detail. The apartment itself feels lived-in but not worn-out, if that makes sense. You can tell someone actually cares about this place rather than just running it as another rental property. The kitchen has everything you’d actually need (proper coffee setup, thank god), and honestly, after spending way too much on restaurant meals, being able to grab groceries from the little market around the corner on Kalķu iela was a lifesaver. The bathroom’s compact but functional – hot water pressure that actually works, which isn’t always a given in these older buildings. And here’s something most places don’t mention: the wifi actually reaches every corner of the apartment, even the bedroom in the back. Small thing, but you know how frustrating it is when you’re trying to video call home and keep losing signal.
The location thing is tricky to explain without sounding like every other travel writer, but I’ll try. You’re close enough to everything that matters – Doma laukums, the Art Nouveau district, those little bars tucked away in basement courtyards – but far enough from the main tourist drag that you won’t hear drunk groups stumbling back to their hostels at 3 AM. I actually found myself using this place as a real base rather than just somewhere to crash. There’s something about having a proper apartment that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like… well, like you’re staying at a friend’s place while they’re out of town. That 9.5 rating isn’t just people being nice – it’s earned. For a 3-star place, Maria’s punches way above its weight, and at these prices, you’d be silly not to consider it if you want to experience Rīga like someone who actually lives here.
