Top-Floor Studio with Courtyard View in UNESCO Area, Murnieku street Residence
So I stumbled across this top-floor studio on Mūrnieku street when I was looking for something different in Riga’s Old Town – and honestly, it ended up being one of those happy accidents that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a local secret. The building itself sits right in the UNESCO World Heritage area, which sounds fancy but really just means you’re surrounded by those gorgeous medieval buildings that make Riga’s historic center so special. What struck me first was how quiet it actually is up there on the top floor, even though you’re literally in the heart of everything.
The courtyard view is… well, it’s not going to win any Instagram contests, but there’s something genuinely peaceful about looking down at this little enclosed space where locals hang their laundry and kids sometimes play. It feels real, you know? Plus, being on the top floor means you get these interesting glimpses of the red-tiled rooftops that stretch across the old city – especially nice in the late afternoon when the light hits just right. The studio itself is pretty compact (I mean, it’s called a studio for a reason), but whoever set it up actually thought about how people live. The kitchenette has everything you need if you want to grab groceries from the Rimi down on Audēju street, and the bathroom is small but functional – better water pressure than I expected, honestly.
Location-wise, you’re about a three-minute walk from Town Hall Square, which puts you right in the thick of tourist central during the day, but here’s the thing – once you duck into that courtyard entrance, it’s like stepping into a different world. The building’s entrance is a bit tricky to find the first time (look for the small brass nameplate), and there’s no elevator, so pack light if you’re not up for hauling luggage up several flights of stairs. But that top-floor isolation is actually part of the charm. I loved being able to walk to Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs for a late dinner, then come back to this peaceful little perch above it all. The neighborhood gets pretty lively on weekend nights – lots of groups wandering between the bars on Kalķu street – but up in the studio, you’re removed enough that it’s more like a gentle hum than actual noise. Just don’t expect luxury amenities or daily housekeeping; this is more like borrowing a friend’s apartment than staying at a hotel, which is exactly what makes it special.
