Riga Cozy Apartment
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Marijas iela 16, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? This little apartment completely changed my mind about staying in Riga’s city center. The building itself is one of those classic Art Nouveau structures that Old Town is famous for, and while the exterior looks a bit weathered (most of them do), the apartment inside is actually really well put together. The owner clearly gets what travelers need – there’s proper blackout curtains (trust me, summer nights in Riga stay bright until almost 11 PM), a kitchen that’s actually functional rather than just decorative, and honestly, the best part is how quiet it stays despite being right in the heart of everything.
What really sold me on this place was the location, though I mean that in a very specific way. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Freedom Monument, which sounds touristy but is actually perfect because it means you’re close to both the medieval Old Town and the newer shopping areas around Elizabetes iela. The apartment sits right at that sweet spot where you can grab groceries at the Rimi down the street, but also stumble home from the craft beer places in Vecrīga without paying for a taxi. Parking is… well, it’s city center parking, so don’t expect miracles, but there’s paid street parking nearby and a couple of lots within walking distance. The neighborhood gets busy during the day with office workers (there’s a bunch of businesses around), but evenings are surprisingly peaceful – I could actually sleep with the windows open, which is rare for a central location like this.
The apartment itself feels like someone’s actual home rather than a sterile hotel room, which I really appreciated after a long day of wandering around the cobblestone streets. There’s this worn leather chair by the window that became my favorite spot for morning coffee, and the shower has proper water pressure – you’d be surprised how often that’s an issue in older Riga buildings. The 8.7 rating makes total sense to me because while it’s not fancy, everything works exactly as it should. Check-in was smooth (they actually answered their phone when I called, which was refreshing), and the host left some local recommendations that were spot-on. I ended up at this tiny basement restaurant called Folkklubs they mentioned, which I never would have found otherwise. If you’re looking for marble bathrooms and room service, this isn’t your place, but if you want to stay somewhere that feels authentically Riga without breaking the bank, honestly, you could do a lot worse than this cozy little spot on Marijas iela.
