Riga Ziepniekkalns Apartment
You know what? The Riga Ziepniekkalns Apartment isn’t going to win any design awards, but honestly, that’s kind of its charm. When I first pulled up to 43 Līvciema iela, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical – this is proper residential Riga, not the tourist-polished Old Town you see in all the photos. But here’s the thing about Ziepniekkalns that most visitors don’t realize: you’re actually living like a local here, and it’s pretty refreshing after dealing with overpriced tourist traps elsewhere.
The apartment itself feels like staying at your Latvian friend’s place (assuming you have one, which I sort of do now). It’s got that Soviet-era building character – thick walls that actually keep things quiet, which surprised me given how close you are to the tram line. The furnishing is practical rather than Instagram-worthy, but everything works, the wifi doesn’t drop out every five minutes, and the kitchen has real pots and pans, not those flimsy things you usually get in budget places. I mean, I actually cooked dinner a couple times, which says something. The bathroom’s small but the water pressure is solid – learned that lesson the hard way in other European cities.
What really makes this place work is the location, though not in the way you’d expect. Sure, you’re about 20 minutes from the cathedral and all that, but Ziepniekkalns has this whole different energy. There’s a proper grocery store (Rimi) literally three minutes away, and the tram stop connects you straight into the center without any transfers – the number 11 becomes your best friend. The neighborhood feels safe even at night, lots of families around, kids playing in the courtyards. I actually started recognizing some of the regulars at the local café by my third day, which never happens in hotel districts. Plus, and this might sound silly, but hearing actual Latvian conversations instead of tourist chatter all day really makes you feel like you’re experiencing something authentic. The check-in was smooth enough – they’re responsive on WhatsApp which beats standing in hotel lobbies. Parking was easy too, just street parking that doesn’t cost a fortune like downtown. Look, it’s a solid 7.9 rating for a reason – not perfect, but it delivers on what it promises without any nasty surprises.
