La Belle Etage
You know what’s funny about La Belle Etage? The name makes it sound all fancy and French, but honestly, that’s not what grabs you when you first walk in. It’s actually this cozy little place tucked right on Baznīcas iela – and I mean literally tucked, because you might walk past it if you’re not paying attention. The entrance is on the fifth floor of this classic Rīga building, which sounds weird until you realize that’s exactly what makes it special.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in the Old Town rather than just visiting it. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from the Doma Cathedral (hence the street name – baznīcas means church), and you can actually hear the bells in the morning, which is either charming or annoying depending on how late you stayed out exploring the bars on Kalķu iela. The building itself has that solid, pre-war feel – thick walls that actually keep things quiet, though you’ll hear your neighbors in the hallway sometimes. Check-in was straightforward, no fuss, and the staff seemed to know the neighborhood really well. They pointed me toward this little café around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise.
What I really appreciated was how the place doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s a solid 3-star spot that just does everything right without any pretense. The rooms are clean and comfortable – not huge, but you’re not spending much time inside anyway when you’re right in the heart of everything. The bathrooms are modern enough, good water pressure, and the WiFi actually works (which isn’t always a given in these old buildings). Parking is… well, it’s Old Town, so good luck with that. But honestly, you don’t need a car here – everything’s walkable, and if you want to explore beyond the center, the tram stops are close by. I stayed there during shoulder season in October, and it was perfectly quiet at night, though I imagine summer might be different with all the tourists wandering around. The whole area comes alive in the evenings, but by midnight or so, it settles down nicely. For the price point and that location – being able to step out your door and be immediately in the maze of cobblestone streets – it’s pretty hard to beat.
