— The hotel
Belle Vue Elizabetes
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first booked Belle Vue Elizabetes – I mean, it’s a 3-star place on a busy street in central Riga, so you know how that usually goes. But walking up to Elizabetes iela 12, I was pleasantly surprised by how well-maintained everything looked. The building has this classic early 20th-century charm that you see all over Riga’s center, and they’ve actually done a nice job preserving that character without making it feel dated.
What really won me over was the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way everyone says. You’re literally a 3-minute walk from the National Opera House, which is perfect if you’re into that scene, and there’s this fantastic little bakery called Dona just around the corner that locals actually go to (not just tourists). The rooms are clean and surprisingly quiet considering you’re right in the thick of things – I was worried about street noise, but the windows do a solid job blocking it out. The staff clearly know their stuff too; when I asked about getting to the Old Town, they didn’t just point me toward the main tourist route but suggested cutting through Vērmanes Garden, which honestly made the whole walk more pleasant. Check-in was smooth, no weird surprises with the bill, and they had decent coffee in the lobby when I needed that morning caffeine fix.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a place where you’re going to get fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy room service. It’s more like… well, it’s exactly what a good 3-star hotel should be. The rooms are comfortable without being luxurious, everything works properly, and you’re not paying for a bunch of stuff you probably won’t use anyway. I stayed there during late spring when Riga gets pretty busy with tourists, and while the hotel was full, it never felt chaotic or overcrowded. The elevators are a bit slow – typical for these older buildings – but that’s honestly my only real complaint. What impressed me most was how the place felt genuinely local rather than like some international chain property. You’ll hear guests speaking Latvian, Russian, and English in the lobby, and the whole vibe is relaxed in that Baltic way where nobody’s trying too hard to impress anyone. For the price point, especially considering you’re staying right in the heart of Riga, it’s actually pretty solid value. I’d definitely book it again, particularly if I wanted to be close to the cultural district without spending a fortune on one of those boutique places.
