— The hotel
Lake&Forest&City
Look, I’ll be honest – the name “Lake&Forest&City” had me rolling my eyes a bit when I first booked this place. I mean, come on, it sounds like someone just threw a bunch of nature words together. But actually staying here? It sort of makes sense once you’re walking around the neighborhood.
The hotel sits on Dores iela, which is this quiet residential street that honestly feels more like a local secret than a tourist zone. You’re technically in Rīga, but it’s got this weird peaceful vibe that’s hard to find in the city center. The building itself is pretty standard – clean, modern-ish, nothing that’ll blow you away from the outside. But here’s the thing that surprised me: the rooms are actually thoughtfully designed. I stayed in one of their corner units, and you know what? You can see glimpses of the Daugava through the trees if you crane your neck just right. Not exactly lakefront property, but hey, water views are water views.
What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually know their neighborhood. The guy at reception – I think his name was Andris – didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map. He sketched out this little route to Mežaparks (that’s the forested area about 10 minutes away) and mentioned that early morning is when you’ll have the walking trails mostly to yourself. He was right, too. I also appreciated that they didn’t oversell the whole “forest” angle – yeah, there are plenty of trees around, and Mežaparks is lovely, but you’re not waking up in some wilderness cabin. The “city” part is real though. You can catch a tram into Old Town in about 20 minutes, which is actually perfect timing-wise. Close enough to duck back for an afternoon nap, far enough to feel like you’re not sleeping in the middle of tourist central.
The 7.4 rating seems about right, honestly. It’s solid without being spectacular – good WiFi, decent breakfast (though they could use more variety), and the beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with the mattress all night. Parking was free, which saved me about 15 euros a day compared to staying downtown. The only real downside? The walls are a bit thin, so if you’re unlucky enough to get neighbors who think 11 PM is the perfect time for a phone conference, you’ll know about it. But most nights were quiet – I think the location just doesn’t attract the party crowd.
I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to explore more of Rīga’s green spaces or just needed a breather from the usual hotel scene. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, which I found refreshing after dealing with places that promise the moon and deliver… well, considerably less than that.
