Kalnina Courtyard Studio
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from a studio apartment on the 5th floor of a building on Alfrēda Kalniņa iela, but honestly, this place completely surprised me. The Kalnina Courtyard Studio has this really nice authentic Riga feel to it – you’re right in the heart of the city but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with constant street noise. The courtyard view is actually pretty charming, especially in the morning when the light hits just right.
The location is what really makes this place work. I mean, you’re literally a few minutes’ walk from the Old Town, but here’s the thing most tourists don’t realize – you’re also super close to where actual locals hang out. There’s this fantastic little bakery just around the corner that does incredible rye bread (trust me on this), and you can walk to Kronvalda Park in about ten minutes when you need to escape the cobblestones. The building itself has character – it’s one of those early 20th century Riga buildings with thick walls, so you don’t hear much from neighbors. Fair warning though, it’s a proper 5th floor with no elevator, so pack light or be ready for a bit of a climb with your luggage.
What I really appreciated was how thoughtfully set up the studio is. The owner clearly knows what travelers actually need – there’s proper counter space in the kitchenette (not just a hot plate shoved in a corner), decent water pressure in the shower, and honestly, the bed is way more comfortable than you’d expect from a 3-star place. The WiFi actually works well, which isn’t always a given in these older buildings. During my stay in late spring, the courtyard was pretty quiet in the evenings, though I imagine summer might bring more activity. The neighborhood gets this lovely golden hour light that makes even the most mundane grocery run feel cinematic – very Riga, if you know what I mean. It’s not luxury by any stretch, but it’s got that perfect balance of being affordable, genuinely comfortable, and putting you right where you want to be to actually experience the city rather than just tourist-trap your way through it.
