— The hotel
Ibis Riga Centre
Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of Ibis hotels across Europe, and honestly? The Riga Centre location really gets it right. You walk in and there’s this immediate sense that someone actually thought about what travelers need – not just what looks good in photos. The lobby’s got that clean, modern Ibis vibe but with these little touches that feel distinctly Latvian, which I wasn’t expecting from a chain hotel.
The location is what sold me initially, and I mean, it’s pretty hard to beat. You’re right on Marijas iela, which puts you about a five-minute walk from the Old Town’s cobblestone streets, but here’s the thing – you’re far enough away that you’re not dealing with the weekend party crowds stumbling around at 2 AM. I actually slept really well, which is saying something because Riga can get surprisingly lively. The rooms are… well, they’re Ibis rooms, you know? Nothing fancy, but the beds are comfortable (they use those memory foam toppers), and the shower pressure is actually decent. The wifi worked without any of that annoying portal nonsense, which honestly made my day since I had work to catch up on.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to know the city beyond just the tourist spots. When I asked about finding a good place for traditional Latvian food that wasn’t touristy, the guy at reception pointed me toward this little place on Elizabetes iela that I never would have found otherwise – and it was absolutely worth it. The breakfast is standard continental fare, but they do include some local touches like these dark rye breads that you don’t usually see at chain hotels. Nothing revolutionary, but it shows they’re paying attention to where they are. The whole experience felt refreshingly straightforward – no hidden fees, no pushy upselling, just a solid place to sleep in a city that’s honestly underrated as a European destination. If you’re planning to explore Riga’s mix of Art Nouveau architecture and Soviet history during the day and want somewhere reliable to crash at night, this works perfectly. Plus, the tram stop right outside makes getting around the city dead simple.
