Cozy apartment in Riga in Torņkalns
You know what struck me first about this place? It’s actually in one of Riga’s most underrated neighborhoods – Torņkalns sits right across the Daugava River from Old Town, but honestly, it feels like you’ve discovered this secret local pocket that most tourists completely miss. The apartment itself is on Jelgavas iela, which is this tree-lined street where you’ll hear more Latvian than English, and that’s exactly what makes it special.
The space has that genuinely cozy vibe that you can’t fake – I mean, it’s not trying to be some Instagram-perfect minimalist box. Instead, it feels like someone’s actual home (because, well, it sort of is). The windows face the courtyard, so you get that nice morning light without the street noise, and honestly, after a day of walking around Riga’s cobblestones, you’ll appreciate how quiet it gets at night. The kitchen is properly equipped too – not just a mini-fridge and microwave situation, but actual pots and pans if you want to cook with some of those amazing ingredients from the Central Market. And here’s something I really appreciated: the shower pressure is actually decent, which… let’s just say that’s not always a given in older European buildings.
What really sells this place though is the location itself. You’re about a fifteen-minute walk to Old Town – close enough that you don’t need to think about transport, but far enough that you’re not dealing with the late-night bar crowds stumbling around. There’s this great little café called Māja right around the corner where locals actually hang out, and if you walk five minutes toward the river, you hit this beautiful stretch along the Daugava where people jog and walk their dogs. The area has a few decent restaurants too, nothing fancy but the kind of places where you can get proper Latvian food without paying tourist prices. I actually found myself spending more time in the neighborhood than I expected – it’s got this relaxed, residential feel that makes you slow down a bit. The only thing I’d mention is that grocery options are a short walk away rather than right next door, but there’s a decent Rimi supermarket about ten minutes on foot. Really though, for the price point and the authentic Riga experience, this little apartment delivers exactly what it promises.
