— The hotel
K1820 Family apartments
You know what really surprised me about K1820? It’s tucked away on Kalēju iela – which honestly sounds intimidating if you don’t speak Latvian, but it’s literally just “Blacksmith Street” – and the whole setup feels like you’re staying in someone’s actual home rather than some sterile hotel complex. The building has this gorgeous Art Nouveau thing going on that Riga does so well, and when you walk up those stairs (there is an elevator, thank god), you can tell someone actually thought about making families comfortable here.
The apartments themselves are what sold me completely. I mean, you’ve got proper kitchens with full-size fridges, which is clutch when you’re traveling with kids who refuse to eat anything that isn’t familiar. The living spaces are generous – not that cramped “European efficiency” nonsense where you’re bumping into furniture every five minutes. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays, even though you’re right in the heart of the Old Town. The windows are properly insulated, so you don’t get the usual street noise that comes with central locations. And speaking of location, you’re literally a three-minute walk from the House of Blackheads and maybe five from the central market – I’d wander over there most mornings for fresh bread and those incredible smoked fish vendors.
The staff actually knows what they’re doing, which sounds basic but you’d be amazed how rare that is. Check-in was smooth, they had real recommendations (not just the tourist traps), and when our youngest managed to clog the bathroom sink with God knows what, maintenance showed up within twenty minutes. The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed there – it’s not trying to be some luxury resort, but everything just works the way it should. Parking can be a bit tricky in that area, but they’ll sort you out with options nearby, and honestly, you won’t need a car much anyway since everything’s walkable. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the Wi-Fi can get a bit spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but that’s pretty much every place in the old city. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels like a proper home base rather than just a place to crash, and you want to be right in the thick of things without paying those insane boutique hotel prices, this is your spot.
