— The hotel
Cosy apartment in the heart of Riga
You know what caught me off guard about this place? It’s tucked away on Aleksandra Čaka iela – which, honestly, is probably the most perfectly central street you’ve never heard of if you’re not from Riga. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Old Town’s cobblestones, but you’re also right in the thick of where actual Rigans live and work. The building itself has that solid, pre-war feel – thick walls that actually keep the sound out, unlike some of the newer conversions I’ve stayed in around Europe.
The apartment lives up to its “cosy” promise without feeling cramped, which is honestly rare. There’s this lived-in quality that makes you feel like you’re staying at a friend’s place rather than some sterile rental. The owner clearly knows what travelers actually need – proper coffee setup, decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every twenty minutes, and enough outlets near the bed (small thing, but you know how annoying it is when there aren’t any). The location really shines when you realize you can walk to Centrs in one direction for all the tourist stuff, or head toward the Central Market in the other for actual local life. I grabbed breakfast at this little bakery just two blocks down – the kind of spot where they know regulars by name and the pastries are still warm at 8 AM.
What really sold me on the place was coming back after a long day wandering around Vecrīga and actually feeling like I was coming home, not just returning to a hotel room. The neighborhood has this perfect mix of quiet residential streets and enough cafes and small shops that you don’t feel isolated. Plus – and this might sound weird – but the shower pressure is fantastic, which after walking around those medieval streets all day, you’ll definitely appreciate. The 9.7 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there; it’s not trying to be fancy, it’s just genuinely good at being what it is. If you’re the type who wants to experience Riga like you actually live there for a few days, rather than just checking landmarks off a list, this spot gets it right.
