Central 2BR Apartment – 10min to Old Town
You know what caught me off guard about this place? The moment I walked up to Blaumaņa iela 9, I realized I was standing in one of those quintessential Riga neighborhoods that somehow manages to feel both lived-in and polished at the same time. The building itself has that classic Art Nouveau character that makes this city so distinctive – not the touristy stuff you see plastered on postcards, but the real deal that locals actually live in.
The apartment (18a, up a few flights – fair warning) is honestly much more spacious than I expected for a central location. Two proper bedrooms, not those cramped hotel rooms where you’re bumping into your travel companion every five minutes. The kitchen actually works, which I mean, sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places phone it in on the appliances. I ended up cooking breakfast most mornings because there’s something satisfying about making coffee while looking out at the morning bustle on Blaumaņa. The whole setup feels like you’re borrowing a friend’s apartment rather than staying in some sterile rental.
What I really appreciated – and this is where that 9.7 rating starts making sense – is how the owners clearly understand what travelers actually need. The wifi doesn’t cut out when you’re trying to video call home, the shower has proper water pressure, and there are enough outlets that you’re not playing musical chairs with your devices. Small stuff, but it adds up when you’re trying to decompress after walking around Old Town all day. Speaking of which, that “10 minutes to Old Town” claim is actually legit. I timed it once out of curiosity, and yeah, about 8-9 minutes of easy walking gets you to the edge of the medieval streets. You’re close enough to pop back for a quick rest or to drop off shopping bags, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the tourist crowd noise at night.
The neighborhood itself is this perfect sweet spot – you’ve got actual grocery stores nearby (the Rimi on Krasta is a short walk), plus you’re practically next door to some of the better local restaurants that haven’t been completely overrun by tour groups yet. I stumbled into this little place called Milda just around the corner that serves portions big enough to split and has that cozy, slightly worn-around-the-edges vibe that makes you want to linger over dinner. The area gets pleasantly quiet after 10 PM, which honestly was a relief after spending days in the busier parts of the city center.
One thing to note – and this isn’t really a complaint, more of a heads up – the building entrance can be a bit tricky to spot if you’re arriving after dark. Look for the numbers on the building; they’re there but not exactly screaming for attention. Also, if you’re the type who needs elevator access, this might not be your spot. But honestly, after a few days of climbing those stairs, I started to think of it as built-in exercise that justified all the rye bread I was consuming.
For what you’re paying and where you’re staying, this place delivers on the promise of giving you a real base in Riga rather than just a bed for the night. It’s the kind of setup that makes you feel like you’re actually experiencing the city instead of just visiting it.
