— The hotel
Last floor two level apartment with fantastic view
Okay, so this place on Kungu iela isn’t technically a hotel – it’s actually a two-level apartment that takes up the entire top floor of this building, and honestly, that’s what makes it so special. I mean, when they say “fantastic view,” they’re not kidding around. You’re basically living above the rooftops of Old Town Riga, and from those big windows you can see all the way to the Daugava River on one side and the medieval spires on the other. The morning light that pours in is just… well, it’s the kind of thing that makes you want to have coffee in your pajamas for way too long.
The apartment itself feels more like borrowing a friend’s really cool place than staying in some cookie-cutter hotel room. There’s this loft-style setup where the bedroom is upstairs (the ceilings get a bit cozy up there, fair warning if you’re tall), and the main living area downstairs has these huge windows that basically frame the city like artwork. The kitchen is actually functional too – not just some tiny hotel kitchenette situation – which is perfect because there’s this fantastic market on Krasta iela where you can grab fresh bread and local cheese. Plus, you know what? Sometimes you just want to make your own coffee without trekking down to the lobby.
Location-wise, you’re right in the thick of things but somehow still peaceful. Kungu iela is one of those streets that feels residential but you’re literally a five-minute walk from the House of the Blackheads and all the main Old Town action. The building itself is solid – I didn’t hear much noise from neighbors or the street, which can be hit or miss in this part of the city, especially during summer when the tourist crowds get thick. Parking is… well, it’s Old Town, so don’t expect to park right outside, but there are spots nearby if you’re driving. Most people just walk everywhere from here anyway, or grab one of those lime scooters that are scattered around (though honestly, the cobblestones make for a bumpy ride). The whole setup just works really well if you want to feel like you’re living in Riga for a few days rather than just passing through – you’ve got the space to spread out, incredible views to wake up to, and you’re still close enough to stumble back from a late dinner at one of those little restaurants tucked away in the medieval streets.
