Audeju Apartments
You know what struck me first about Audeju Apartments? It’s actually on one of those cobblestone streets in Old Town Riga that feels like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale – except you’re not staying in some tourist trap, you’re right in the middle of where locals actually hang out. Audēju iela is this narrow little street that connects to Kalķu, so you’re literally a two-minute walk from the main drag but tucked away enough that you’re not hearing drunk tourists at 2 AM. I mean, the building itself has that beautiful Art Nouveau thing going on that Riga’s famous for, but inside it’s been completely modernized without losing the character. The apartments – and these are proper apartments, not just hotel rooms with a mini fridge – have these gorgeous high ceilings and original hardwood floors that creak just enough to remind you you’re in a 19th-century building.
What I honestly love about this place is how it gets the balance right between being in the thick of things and actually being livable. You can walk to Dome Cathedral in about three minutes, hit up the Central Market for fresh bread and local cheese, then come back and actually cook something decent in your kitchen. The kitchens are fully equipped too – none of that “we gave you two plates and called it furnished” nonsense. During my stay, I’d grab ingredients from the market in the morning, then spend afternoons exploring, and evenings I could cook while sipping wine I picked up from that little shop on Grecinieku street. The Wi-Fi actually works (crucial for me since I was working remotely), and the washing machines in the units are a godsend if you’re staying more than a few days.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a place where you’ll get 24/7 concierge service or someone to carry your bags. It’s more independent living, which honestly I prefer. Check-in was smooth, they gave me all the local insights I needed, and then I was free to live like a temporary Rigan. The 8.6 rating makes sense because it delivers exactly what it promises – comfortable, well-located apartments that let you experience the city like you actually live there, not like you’re just passing through. If you’re the type who needs room service and daily housekeeping, maybe look elsewhere. But if you want to wake up, grab coffee from that excellent little café on Skārņu street, and feel like you’ve got your own place in one of Europe’s most underrated capitals, this is your spot.
