Apartment with a fire-place
You know what caught me off guard about this place? The moment I walked into this apartment on Bruņinieku iela, I actually felt like I was stepping into someone’s home rather than another sterile rental. The fireplace – and I mean a proper one, not some fake electric thing – sits right there in the living area and honestly transforms the whole vibe, especially during those brutal Riga winters when the wind whips off the Daugava.
The location is sort of perfect if you know the city at all. Bruņinieku street puts you in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk to Old Town (maybe 15-20 minutes if you don’t mind the stroll), but you’re actually living in a real neighborhood where locals shop and hang out. There’s a Rimi just down the street for groceries, and – this is key – parking isn’t the nightmare it is closer to the center. I mean, you’ll still need to pay attention to the signs, but you can actually find a spot without circling for an hour. The building itself is one of those solid Soviet-era constructions, which sounds awful but actually means thick walls and decent soundproofing. You won’t hear every conversation from the apartment next door, trust me on that.
What really makes this place work is the attention to small details that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for more than a night. The kitchen has real plates and proper coffee cups, not those paper-thin things that burn your fingers. The fireplace comes with actual firewood – they don’t just show you this beautiful feature and leave you to figure out how to use it. During my stay in February, I spent most evenings just sitting by the fire with a book and some local beer from the shop downstairs. The heating works well throughout the apartment, but there’s something about that crackling fire that makes even the grayest Latvian winter day feel cozy. The Wi-Fi is solid (I worked from there for a week), and the shower actually has good water pressure, which you can’t take for granted in older buildings around here. Check-in was straightforward – they met me at the apartment rather than making me trek to some office across town. Honestly, with a 9.3 rating, I was expecting maybe some inflated reviews, but this place actually delivers on what it promises. It’s not fancy in that Instagram way, but it’s genuinely comfortable and feels authentic to the city.
