Valdemara apartaments 39
You know what caught me off guard about Valdemara apartaments 39? The building doesn’t look like much from the street – honestly, I walked past it twice before realizing this was the place. But here’s the thing about Riga’s apartment hotels: the best ones are often tucked away in these solid old buildings that locals actually live in, and this one’s no exception.
The location is actually brilliant once you get your bearings. Krišjāņa Valdemāra street runs right through the heart of the city, and you’re basically a ten-minute walk from Old Town without dealing with all the tourist chaos right outside your door. I mean, you can grab groceries at the Rimi down the street, there’s a decent coffee place (Baltic Coffee Company) maybe three blocks away, and the tram stops are close enough that you don’t need to think about taxis unless you want to. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – you’re on a residential stretch, so no drunk groups stumbling around at 2 AM like you’d get if you stayed right in the medieval center.
The apartment itself feels lived-in in the best way possible. It’s clearly been set up by someone who actually understands what people need when they’re staying somewhere for more than a night or two. The kitchen has real plates and proper coffee cups, not those tiny hotel ones that make you feel like you’re playing house. The shower pressure is surprisingly good – and trust me, that’s not always a given in these older Riga buildings. I had apartment 39 (hence the name, I guess), and the windows face the courtyard, which means it’s genuinely quiet but you don’t get much natural light. Small trade-off, though the place stays cool in summer because of it. The WiFi actually works well enough for video calls, which honestly surprised me given how hit-or-miss internet can be in Latvian apartments.
Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward key-pickup-from-a-random-cafe thing some apartment places do. The whole setup just feels more professional than your typical Airbnb situation, but way more personal than a chain hotel. That 9.3 rating makes sense when you stay there; it’s not fancy or Instagram-perfect, but everything works and you feel like you’re getting genuine value. Plus, you’re staying in an actual neighborhood where you can see how people really live in Riga, not just the postcard version.
