Vaidava’s Apartment
You know what? I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Riga, and Vaidava’s Apartment completely caught me off guard – in the best way possible. When I first saw the address on Vaidavas iela, I’ll be honest, I had to look it up because it’s not in the touristy Old Town area everyone talks about. But that actually turned out to be exactly why this place works so well.
The thing about staying here is that you’re in a proper residential neighborhood where actual Rigans live their lives. I mean, you’ve got the Daugava River literally a few minutes’ walk away, and honestly, those morning walks along the riverbank became my favorite part of each day. The apartment itself sits in this quiet pocket of the city – I was worried about street noise since I’m a light sleeper, but the only sounds I heard were occasional footsteps in the hallway and maybe some distant tram bells. The host clearly knows what they’re doing because everything just… works. The WiFi doesn’t cut out when you need it most, the shower has actual water pressure (you’d be surprised how often that’s an issue), and there’s this great little kitchen setup where I could make proper coffee in the morning instead of relying on hotel instant stuff.
What really sold me on this place, though, was how it felt like staying in someone’s well-loved home rather than a sterile rental. The furnishings aren’t trying to be Instagram-perfect, but they’re comfortable and thoughtful – like that reading chair by the window where you can watch the neighborhood wake up. And honestly, the location grows on you fast. Sure, you’re not stumbling distance from Dome Square, but you’re also not dealing with cruise ship crowds at 7 AM. Plus, getting into the city center takes maybe 15 minutes by tram, and there’s a stop practically around the corner. The neighborhood has this lived-in charm – there’s a small grocery store where the owner started recognizing me after day two, and a few local cafés where you can get proper Latvian pastries without the tourist markup. I actually found myself coming back to the apartment during the day just to decompress, which says something because usually I’m out exploring from dawn to dusk. The space has this calm energy that makes you want to slow down a bit, maybe read a book or plan tomorrow’s adventures without feeling rushed. For a 3-star place, it punches way above its weight – that 9.8 rating isn’t just people being nice, it’s because the host has figured out all those little details that make or break a stay.
