— The hotel
Unique design, hype location!
You know what? I walked past this place on Melnsila iela probably a dozen times before I actually noticed the name – “Unique design, hype location!” – which honestly made me roll my eyes a bit. I mean, come on, right? But then I stayed there last month and… okay, they’re not wrong about either claim.
The thing is, Melnsila street isn’t one of those touristy Old Town cobblestone situations – it’s actually in this really interesting pocket of Riga that’s sort of between the historic center and where real life happens. You’re about a 12-minute walk from the Freedom Monument, but you’ll pass this great little bakery (Maize) and a couple of those Soviet-era apartment blocks that somehow look cool now instead of depressing. The hotel itself sits in what used to be – I’m guessing here – some kind of industrial building, because the ceilings are ridiculously high and there’s this whole exposed brick thing going on that actually works. The lobby has these weird angular furniture pieces that should feel uncomfortable but don’t, and the lighting is all warm and moody in a way that makes you want to hang out there even when you don’t need to.
What surprised me most was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re basically in the middle of the city. The rooms face away from the main street, so you get this nice view of a little courtyard area instead of traffic. My room had this massive window – floor to ceiling – and the bed was one of those firm European ones that I usually hate but somehow slept great on. The bathroom was tiny but clever, with this rain shower that had actual pressure (thank god). Only weird thing was the mini-fridge, which was tucked into this custom cabinet and took me forever to find. Also, fair warning – the elevator is one of those old-school ones that takes its sweet time, but it’s kind of charming in a vintage way. The staff was genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions. The guy at the front desk gave me this whole rundown of where to get the best coffee nearby (turns out it’s this place called Miit, about three blocks away) and which trams to take to avoid the construction mess near the river. Check-in was smooth, they had my room ready early, and honestly the whole vibe just felt… comfortable. Like staying at a friend’s place if your friend happened to have really good taste and way more money than you. For a 4-star place with an 8.8 rating, it delivers on both the design promise and yeah, the location really is pretty hype – you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the cruise ship crowds to feel like you’re experiencing actual Riga.
