— The hotel
The Paradise House
You know what? I’ve walked past The Paradise House on Bernātu iela probably a dozen times before I actually stayed there, and honestly, I was kicking myself for not trying it sooner. It’s tucked into this quiet residential street that most tourists never discover – which is actually perfect because you’re close enough to Old Town to walk there in about 15 minutes, but far enough away that you won’t hear drunk groups singing at 2 AM.
The building itself has this understated charm that grows on you. I mean, it’s not going to win any architectural awards, but there’s something refreshingly honest about a 3-star place that doesn’t try to pretend it’s the Four Seasons. The lobby’s small but welcoming, and the staff – well, they actually seem to care about what they’re doing, which you can’t always say about hotels in this price range. My room was on the second floor (there’s an elevator, thank god), and while it wasn’t huge, everything worked properly. The shower had actual water pressure, the WiFi didn’t cut out every five minutes, and the bed was comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been sleeping on concrete. Sometimes that’s all you really need, right?
Here’s what I really appreciated though – the location gives you this perfect glimpse into how actual Rigans live. You’ve got a small grocery store literally around the corner, and this little bakery about two blocks down that makes incredible rye bread (the locals line up there every morning around 8). If you’re into that sort of thing, the nearby streets are lined with these beautiful Art Nouveau buildings that aren’t crawling with tour groups like the ones in the city center. Parking can be a bit tricky – there’s street parking but it fills up during the day, so if you’re driving, get there early or be prepared to walk a few blocks. The 8.2 rating seems about right to me; it’s not perfect (the breakfast is pretty basic, and some of the furniture looks like it’s seen better days), but it delivers on what it promises. For the price point, especially during summer when everything else in Riga gets ridiculously expensive, The Paradise House offers solid value without any nasty surprises. Plus, there’s something to be said for staying somewhere that feels more like a neighborhood spot than a tourist trap.
