Soleil – shine of the old town, parking & sauna

You know what caught me off guard about Soleil? The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there. I mean, you’d think it’s just another cutesy hotel name, but when that morning light hits the old town cobblestones right outside your window on Aldaru iela, you get it. The whole place sort of glows – and honestly, that’s not me being dramatic.

I’ve stayed in plenty of four-star places around Riga’s old town, but this one feels different. Maybe it’s because they actually solved the parking nightmare (which, if you’ve ever tried to park near the old town, you know is worth its weight in gold). The sauna situation is pretty sweet too – not some cramped afterthought, but a proper space where you can actually unwind after walking those uneven medieval streets all day. Your feet will thank you, trust me. What really got me though was how they’ve managed to keep that historic charm without making you feel like you’re roughing it. The building has this weathered elegance that fits perfectly with the neighborhood, but inside? Everything works the way it should. The Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out, the shower has proper pressure, and – this is a small thing, but it matters – the windows actually block out the sound from late-night revelers stumbling back from the bars on nearby streets.

The staff here seem to actually know the area, which is rarer than you’d think. They’ll point you toward the quieter entrance to the Christmas market in December, or mention that the best coffee is two blocks over, not at the tourist trap everyone photographs. Location-wise, you’re literally in the thick of things but on a street that doesn’t get completely overrun during peak tourist season. I walked to pretty much everything – the cathedral, the market halls, even down to the Daugava riverfront – but came back to relative peace each evening. The 9.5 rating isn’t just numbers on a screen; you can feel why people keep coming back and actually taking the time to leave glowing reviews. It’s one of those places where small details add up to something that feels genuinely special rather than just professionally adequate.
