You know what really struck me about the Rixwell Old Riga Palace Hotel? It’s tucked away on Minsterejas iela – honestly, I almost walked past it the first time because it blends so seamlessly into the old town fabric. But that’s actually what makes it special. You’re literally steps from the cobblestone maze of Vecrīga, and I mean literally – you can hear the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages in the morning (charming at 9 AM, less so at 6 AM if you’re a light sleeper, just saying).

The building itself has this wonderful old-world weight to it, thick walls that keep things surprisingly quiet inside despite being in the heart of everything. The lobby feels properly European – not trying too hard to be grand, just solid and welcoming with these high ceilings that make you look up. Check-in was smooth, and the staff actually knew the neighborhood well enough to give real recommendations, not just the tourist traps. They pointed me toward this little café around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – comfortable beds, decent-sized bathrooms, and windows that actually open (something I’ve learned not to take for granted in older European hotels). Mine overlooked a quiet courtyard, which was perfect because Old Riga can get pretty lively, especially on weekends when the stag parties descend.

What I really appreciated was how the hotel sits right in that sweet spot between being in the thick of things and having some breathing room. You can walk to Dome Square in about three minutes, hit the best restaurants on Kalku iela without breaking a sweat, and still come back to a place that doesn’t feel like a tourist factory. The breakfast spread was honestly better than I expected – proper local touches alongside the usual continental stuff, and the coffee was strong enough to fuel a morning of walking on those medieval cobblestones (wear good shoes, trust me). Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this part of town, but the hotel works with a nearby garage, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need your car anyway. Everything worth seeing is either walkable or a quick tram ride away. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if you want to feel like you’re actually in Riga rather than just passing through it.

  This hotel is beautiful and well maintained. The staff were readily available and professional. The breakfast was well stocked with good food. We enjoyed our stay.
