— The hotel
RIJA Riga City Centre Hotel
So I’ve stayed at the RIJA Riga City Centre a couple times now, and honestly, it’s one of those places that just works – you know what I mean? It sits right on Dzirnavu Street, which is basically where all the action happens without being touristy-crazy. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the Freedom Monument, and I mean literally – I timed it because I’m weird like that.
The thing about this hotel is it feels properly Latvian, if that makes sense. The lobby has this understated elegance that’s very Baltic – clean lines, good wood, nothing flashy but everything feels solid and well-made. Check-in was smooth both times (though avoid arriving during their afternoon shift change around 3 PM – learned that the hard way). The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – nothing fancy but everything you actually need. The beds are surprisingly comfortable, and the windows are thick enough that you won’t hear the trams rumbling down Dzirnavu at 6 AM, which is honestly a blessing because those things are loud.
What really sold me on this place was the breakfast – it’s got that perfect mix of international stuff and local touches. They do these little rye bread options that are so much better than the generic hotel rolls you usually get, and the coffee is actually decent (not amazing, but decent). The staff genuinely seems to care about what they’re doing, which you notice in small ways – like how they remember your room number after day two, or how the cleaning lady always arranges your charging cables neatly instead of just shoving them aside.
Location-wise, you’re in the sweet spot. Walk five minutes toward the Old Town and you hit all the medieval tourist stuff, but walk five minutes the other way and you’re in the local neighborhood where people actually live and work. There’s a fantastic little grocery store called Rimi just around the corner on Blaumaņa Street – perfect for grabbing snacks or a bottle of that local black balsam if you’re feeling adventurous. The hotel doesn’t have parking (most places in central Riga don’t), but there’s a decent public lot about two blocks away if you’re driving.
I mean, let’s be honest – at 8.4 rating, you’re not getting luxury, but you’re getting something better: reliability. It’s the kind of place where everything works, the shower has good pressure, the WiFi doesn’t cut out during your video calls, and you feel like you’re staying somewhere with actual character rather than a generic chain box. Plus, the price point is reasonable for being this central – you’re paying for location and quality, not marble bathrooms and fancy amenities you probably won’t use anyway.
If you want to experience Riga properly without breaking the bank or dealing with hostel nonsense, this is your spot. Just book directly with them if you can – sometimes they throw in little perks that the booking sites don’t mention.
