— The hotel
Prima Riga
First Impressions
Prima Riga sits right in the heart of Old Town on Vaļņu Street, and honestly, the location alone makes this place special. You’re literally steps away from the medieval cobblestones and historic buildings that make Riga so captivating. The building itself has this solid, unpretentious feel — it’s not trying to be flashy, but there’s something reassuring about the straightforward approach they take here.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in was exactly what I needed after long days exploring the Baltics. Clean lines, comfortable beds, and — this matters more than you’d think — really good blackout curtains. The windows actually open (you know how rare that’s becoming?), which means you can get fresh air instead of relying on AC all the time. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, with everything you need and nothing you don’t.
Location & Getting Around
Here’s what I love about staying on Vaļņu Street — you can walk to Doma laukums in about three minutes, and the House of the Blackheads is practically around the corner. But unlike some hotels right in the tourist zone, Prima Riga doesn’t feel like you’re paying a premium just for the address. The tram stops are close by, so getting to areas like Āgenskalns or the Art Nouveau district is straightforward.
What Sets It Apart
This three-star place punches above its weight in ways that matter. The staff actually knows the neighborhood — I mean, they gave me directions to this little café on Skārņu Street that I never would’ve found otherwise. The restaurant serves solid local dishes, and while it’s not going to win any culinary awards, the grey peas with bacon hit the spot after walking around in Baltic winter weather.
Why Guests Love It
What really works here is the balance between location and value. You’re staying in prime Old Town real estate, but you’re not paying Old Town tourist prices. The parking situation is handled well too — they’ve got spaces available, which is honestly a relief given how narrow these old streets can be. I’ve stayed at fancier places in Riga, but I keep coming back to Prima Riga because it just works without any fuss or pretense.
