Clean lines, decent furnishings, and – this might sound small but it matters – proper hangers in the closet and kitchen tools that actually work.

What really sold me on this spot was the location, though I mean that in a very specific way. Matīsa iela sits in this sweet spot where you’re still properly in Riga but away from the tourist chaos of Old Town. There’s a Rimi supermarket about a five-minute walk away (essential for coffee and those excellent local pastries), and you can catch the tram to the city center without any hassle. The neighborhood has this authentic residential vibe – you’ll hear kids playing in the courtyards, smell someone’s dinner cooking, notice the same locals walking their dogs at the same time each evening. It’s real Riga life, not the sanitized hotel version.

The apartment itself handles the practical stuff well. Hot water was consistent (trust me, I tested it multiple times), and the heating actually keeps up with those Baltic winters. There’s decent natural light, which matters more than you’d think during the darker months. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – it’s street parking, so you’ll need to figure out the local rules, but honestly that’s pretty standard for this part of town. The building is quiet enough that I could work from the kitchen table without distraction, though you’ll occasionally hear the tram rumbling by, which I actually found kind of soothing. Check-in was straightforward, no drama, and the host responded quickly when I had questions about the Wi-Fi setup. One small thing – the shower pressure is decent but not amazing, so don’t expect a spa experience there. But for the price point and the genuine neighborhood feel, this place delivers something you can’t get from the generic hotel chains downtown. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll actually feel like you’re experiencing Riga rather than just visiting it.
