One bedroom Apartment in Old Town
Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of Old Town apartments across Europe, and this little gem on Kalēju iela genuinely surprised me. You know that feeling when you walk into a place and it just feels right? That’s what happened here – honestly wasn’t expecting much from the photos, but the moment I stepped inside, I could tell someone actually cared about making this space work for travelers.
The location is what really sold me though. Kalēju Street puts you right in the thick of Riga’s medieval charm without being stuck on one of those touristy cobblestone nightmares where you can’t sleep past 6 AM because of street cleaners. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Town Hall Square, but tucked away enough that you actually get some peace at night. The apartment itself has that perfect lived-in feel – not sterile like those cookie-cutter hotel rooms, but not cluttered either. The bedroom’s got proper blackout curtains (thank god), and the little kitchenette is actually functional if you want to grab groceries from the Rimi down the street instead of eating out every meal. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical stuff – decent water pressure, reliable wifi, and they’ve got the heating figured out, which honestly can’t be said for every place in this part of town.
Here’s the thing about staying in Old Town Riga that nobody tells you: most of these historic buildings are gorgeous but completely impractical for modern living. This place somehow manages to keep the character – you’ve got those thick walls and high ceilings that make you feel like you’re actually in Latvia, not some international chain – while still being comfortable. The owner clearly knows what travelers need because there’s stuff like proper hangers (not those security ones that don’t work), a full-length mirror, and even a little coffee setup that doesn’t taste like cardboard. I walked everywhere from here – the Central Market’s about fifteen minutes if you don’t mind the stroll, and you’re close enough to the Daugava that you can wander down for sunset views when the weather’s decent. Only minor complaint? The stairs are pretty steep, but that’s just Old Town life. Given that this place consistently gets reviews in the 9+ range, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’ve got the balance right between authentic and actually livable.
