OLD TOWN Serenity Breeze Apartment Prime Location
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Riga’s Old Town, and honestly? Most of them are either tourist traps or cramped spaces that barely fit a suitcase. But this little apartment on Kalēju iela – well, it’s actually something different. The name’s a bit of a mouthful (OLD TOWN Serenity Breeze Apartment Prime Location), but don’t let that put you off. Sometimes the best places have the worst names, you know?
The thing about Kalēju street is that it’s right in the thick of things without being on one of those main drags where drunk tourists stumble around at 3 AM. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Town Hall Square, but when you close the windows at night, it’s actually quiet enough to sleep. I mean, you’ll still hear the occasional tram rumbling by on Daugavgrīvas, but it’s more of a gentle city lullaby than the chaos you get closer to the Dome Cathedral area. The apartment itself feels like someone’s actual home – not one of those sterile Airbnb setups where everything’s beige and there’s nothing in the fridge. There are books on the shelves (some in English, actually), the coffee machine works properly, and the shower has decent water pressure, which… trust me, that’s not a given in these medieval buildings.
What really got me was how the light comes through the windows in the morning. The building’s positioned just right so you get this warm glow without the harsh glare that bounces off all the cobblestones. And the kitchen – honestly, it’s better equipped than my place back home. I ended up cooking breakfast most mornings instead of hunting for decent coffee shops, though if you do want to venture out, Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs is literally around the corner, and they do this incredible honey cake that’s worth the inevitable food coma. The host was pretty straightforward with check-in too – none of that awkward key-hiding nonsense or waiting around for someone to show up. Just clear instructions and everything worked exactly as promised. I guess that’s why it’s got such a high rating – it’s the kind of place where someone clearly thought through all the little annoyances that usually drive you crazy when you’re traveling. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the stairs are a bit steep (typical for these old buildings), so if you’re hauling heavy luggage, maybe pack light or be prepared for a bit of a workout. But honestly, for the location and the quality of the space, it’s pretty much exactly what you want when you’re exploring Riga properly.
