You know what caught me off guard about Old Town Apartments? It’s actually tucked away on Marstaļu iela, which means you’re literally a two-minute walk from the old town’s main action but without the tourist chaos right outside your window. I mean, you can still hear the occasional late-night revelers on weekends, but it’s nothing like staying directly on Kalķu or Vaļņu streets where the noise never stops.

The building itself has that solid Soviet-era feel — thick walls, high ceilings, and those heavy wooden doors that make you feel like you’re unlocking a secret. Honestly, some people might find it a bit dated (the hallways could use better lighting), but there’s something authentic about it that I actually appreciated. The apartments vary quite a bit — I stayed in one with a tiny kitchenette that was perfect for making morning coffee, though don’t expect fancy appliances. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious, and the water pressure was decent, which isn’t always a given in these older Riga buildings. What really sold me was the view from the third floor — you can see the spires of St. Peter’s Church peeking over the rooftops, especially nice in the early morning when the light hits just right.

The location is honestly the biggest selling point here. You’re close enough to walk to Dome Square in about five minutes, but far enough that you can actually get some sleep. There’s a small grocery store on the corner of Marstaļu and Smilšu that stays open late, which saved me more than once when I needed basics. The 7.2 rating makes sense — it’s not luxury by any stretch, but it delivers exactly what it promises. Check-in was straightforward (though the building entrance can be a bit confusing at first), and the woman who manages the place speaks good English and actually gave me useful tips about avoiding the tourist traps. If you’re looking for a base to explore Riga’s old town without paying hotel prices, and you don’t mind a place with more character than polish, this works really well.

  What could be improved: The “room” to sleep. It’s more like a cave. I had to step over my misses so I could go to the toilet overnight. The drain in the shower was a little blocked so the water was raising.. the toilet is located in a very narrowed corner.

  What could be improved: Shower doors broken, apartment a bit under-furnished (e.g., lacking some piece of furniture next to mirror in the entrance area to be able to conveniently use the mirror). The overall vibe is that the apt needs a bit more love to feel more like home – it’s very clearly an apt for booking.

  Great communication and support by the flat manager. Amazing location, in the heart of the old town, close to a bus stop that takes you to the airport. Quaint and pleasant flat, nice views out of the window.
  
  What could be improved: The kitchenette could be revamped a bit, it feels slightly outdated. It has all the essentials but with a small investment it could be modernized significantly, giving the flat a nicer overall feel.
