— The hotel
Old town 2 bedroom / Top location
Look, I’ll be straight with you about this place on Kaļķu iela – it’s honestly one of those spots where the location just makes everything else fall into place. You’re literally in the heart of Riga’s Old Town, and I mean *actually* in it, not some “historic district adjacent” situation that disappoints when you arrive. Step out the door and you’re surrounded by those gorgeous medieval buildings, with the cobblestones under your feet and the whole UNESCO World Heritage vibe happening around you.
The apartment itself is pretty solid for what you’re paying – it’s got that lived-in feel that I actually prefer over sterile hotel rooms. Two bedrooms work great if you’re traveling with friends or family, and honestly, the kitchen setup is decent enough that you can grab some stuff from the Central Market (which is just a short walk away, by the way) and actually cook instead of eating out every meal. The 7.2 rating makes sense to me – it’s not going to blow you away with luxury, but it gets the job done and the location is killer. I mean, you’re steps away from the Dome Cathedral, and you can walk to pretty much everything worth seeing in Old Town without breaking a sweat.
What really sold me on this place was how it sits right in the mix of things without being on one of those tourist-packed streets where you can’t sleep because of the noise. Kaļķu iela has this nice balance – you get the energy of being in the center, but it’s not like staying right on the main square where there’s constant foot traffic and street performers until midnight. The building itself has that old European charm (you know, the kind with stairs that creak a bit and walls that have stories), and while it’s not fancy, it feels authentic. Plus, you’re close enough to Vecrīga that you can stumble back after trying some of that local black balsam without needing to figure out transportation – trust me on this one. The only thing I’d mention is that parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving, but honestly, if you’re staying here, you probably don’t need a car anyway since everything’s walkable.
