— The hotel
MOODar RENT
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to MOODar RENT on Bruņinieku iela – honestly, the name had me a bit confused (is it a hotel or a rental company?), but this place completely surprised me. It’s tucked away in this quiet residential stretch that most tourists never see, about a 15-minute walk from Old Town if you cut through the parks. The building itself is pretty understated, which I actually loved – no flashy signs or tourist traps nearby, just real Riga neighborhood vibes.
The moment I stepped inside, I got why this place has a 9.4 rating despite being “just” a 3-star spot. The staff actually remembered my name by day two (I mean, how often does that happen?), and the rooms – well, they’re not huge, but they’re thoughtfully designed in a way that makes you feel like you’re staying in a friend’s well-appointed apartment rather than a generic hotel box. The beds are surprisingly comfortable, and here’s something nobody tells you about Riga hotels: the windows actually open properly, which is amazing during those white nights in summer when you want fresh air but the city stays bright until nearly midnight. I could hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which tells you something about the location.
What really sets MOODar RENT apart is how it sits in the neighborhood – you’re literally living like a local for a few days. There’s this fantastic little bakery two blocks down where the babushkas line up for fresh bread every morning around 8 AM, and if you walk five minutes toward Daugavgrīva iela, you’ll find grocery stores and cafes that aren’t marking up prices for tourists. The area feels safe to walk around at night, and parking (if you’re driving) isn’t the nightmare it can be closer to the city center. I’ll be honest, it’s not the most exciting location if you want to stumble out your door into bars and restaurants, but the trade-off is actually getting to experience how people live in Riga rather than just where they take photos. Plus, the tram connections are decent when you do want to head into the thick of things – though I found myself enjoying the 20-minute walks through different neighborhoods more than I expected.
