— The hotel
Monument View Residence
You know what caught me off guard about Monument View Residence? It’s actually tucked away on Brīvības bulvāris in this gorgeous converted building that feels way more intimate than the address suggests. I mean, when you hear “boulevard,” you’re expecting traffic noise and tourist chaos, but this little gem sits back from the main drag just enough that you get the best of both worlds – easy access to everything without the constant hum of city life keeping you up at night.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Rīga rather than just visiting. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the Freedom Monument (hence the name, I guess), and the Old Town is right there, but here’s the thing nobody tells you – you’re also walking distance from some of the locals’ favorite spots that most tourists never find. There’s this little coffee place around the corner that opens at 6 AM, which saved my life more than once when I needed my morning fix before the hotel breakfast started. The building itself has that classic Rīga charm – you know, the kind of architecture that makes you stop and take photos even when you’re just trying to get home with groceries.
What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to keep the character of the place while making everything actually work for modern travelers. The rooms are thoughtfully laid out – not huge, but cleverly designed so you’re not tripping over your suitcase every time you want to look out the window. And speaking of windows, the views are legit. Some rooms face the monument directly, others look out over the quieter residential streets, and honestly, I preferred the latter because you get these glimpses into how people actually live here. The staff clearly knows their stuff too – they gave me restaurant recommendations that were spot-on, including this tiny place that doesn’t even have a proper sign but serves the best pork schnitzel I’ve ever had. Check-in was smooth, parking is available (which is actually a big deal in this part of town), and they seem to really get that travelers want local insights, not just the standard tourist brochure suggestions. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying longer than planned because it just feels right – comfortable without being boring, well-located without being overpriced, and run by people who actually care about whether you have a good time in their city.
