Metropolia Apartment Terrace
You know what caught me off guard about Metropolia Apartment Terrace? The fact that it’s tucked away on Anniņmuižas bulvāris in this residential pocket of Riga that honestly feels more like where locals actually live than where tourists usually end up. I mean, you’re still only about fifteen minutes from Old Town, but there’s something refreshing about waking up in a neighborhood where people are walking their dogs and grabbing coffee at corner spots rather than posing for Instagram shots. The building itself has that solid, understated feel that a lot of newer Riga developments seem to nail – not trying too hard to be flashy, but definitely comfortable in its own skin.
The apartment setup is what really makes this place work, though. These aren’t your typical cramped hotel rooms with a sad little desk shoved in the corner. We’re talking actual living space here – proper kitchens where you can cook breakfast without bumping into the bed, terraces that are big enough to actually sit on (hence the name, I guess), and windows that let in enough light to make you forget you’re in a city that doesn’t see the sun for half the year. The 4-star rating feels about right; it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury touches, but everything works the way it should, and the WiFi is solid – which, let’s be honest, is half the battle these days. I actually appreciated that they didn’t go overboard with the design stuff; sometimes you just want a place that feels functional and clean without having to navigate around some designer’s vision of what a “modern traveler” needs.
What I really loved, though, was how quiet it gets at night. You’re far enough from the bar district that you’re not dealing with drunk tourists stumbling around at 3 AM, but close enough to decent public transport that getting around isn’t a hassle. The area around Anniņmuižas has this nice mix of green space and actual neighborhood life – there’s a decent grocery store within walking distance, and I found myself grabbing pastries from this little bakery that definitely wasn’t listed in any guidebooks. Parking was surprisingly straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in Riga will tell you is not something to take for granted. Honestly, the 8.5 rating makes sense; it’s the kind of place where nothing goes wrong, you sleep well, and you’re not constantly thinking about what you’re missing by not staying somewhere more central. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
