— The hotel
Hotel Vantis Riverside
You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Vantis Riverside? The location actually works way better than you’d expect from looking at the address. Yeah, Tīklu iela isn’t exactly in the heart of Old Town, but honestly – that’s kind of the point. You’re tucked away in this quieter part of Riga where locals actually live and work, about a 15-minute walk from the tourist crowds, which I mean, sometimes you need that breathing room after a day of cobblestone streets and cathedral visits.
The building itself has this understated thing going on – it’s not trying to be some grand palace hotel, but the rooms are genuinely comfortable and surprisingly well thought out. I stayed on the third floor and could hear the Daugava river if I opened the window, which was nice for falling asleep. The staff here actually knows what they’re doing too, not just going through the motions like at some places. When I asked about getting to the Central Market early (because trust me, you want to hit it before 10 AM), the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward a map – he told me which entrance to use and which vendors have the best smoked fish. That’s the kind of local insight you can’t Google.
What really sells this place for me is how it sits in the neighborhood. There’s this little café called Miit just around the corner where you can get proper Latvian breakfast for half what you’d pay near the cathedral, and honestly, the coffee’s better too. The hotel itself doesn’t have parking included, but there’s street parking that’s not too brutal to figure out, and if you’re planning to explore on foot anyway (which you should), you’re perfectly positioned. The tram stop on Daugavgrīvas is maybe a three-minute walk, so getting around is actually easier than staying right in the center where everything’s pedestrian-only and your taxi has to drop you two blocks away. I’ll be straight with you – the breakfast isn’t going to blow your mind, but it’s solid and they don’t rush you out. The Wi-Fi works properly throughout the building, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many places still can’t get that right. For a 3-star place, they’re definitely punching above their weight – that 8.9 rating isn’t just people being generous.
