— The hotel
Elegant Apartment
You know what struck me first about Elegant Apartment? The name’s actually pretty spot-on – it really does feel more like staying in someone’s thoughtfully designed city flat than a typical hotel room. It’s tucked right on Marijas iela, which honestly is one of those streets that perfectly captures what I love about Riga’s Old Town area. You’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the main tourist drag that you won’t hear groups of bachelor parties stumbling past your window at 2 AM.
The building itself has that solid, pre-war feel that you get all over this part of the city – thick walls that actually keep the sound out (trust me, I’m a light sleeper), and those high ceilings that make even a modest space feel airy. What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to blend modern comfort with the character of the neighborhood. The apartments – and I mean that literally, these feel like proper apartments – have been updated in all the right ways without losing that European charm that makes Riga special. The kitchen setup is actually functional, not just for show, which is rare in city center accommodations. I ended up grabbing fresh bread from the little bakery just around the corner on Grecinieku and making proper coffee in the mornings instead of rushing out to find decent breakfast.
Location-wise, you’re maybe a seven-minute walk to the Freedom Monument, and the Central Market is close enough that you can smell the smoked fish on weekend mornings when the wind’s right. The tram stops on Marijas are super convenient – honestly, I barely used taxis the whole time I was there. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving, but that’s true for most of central Riga, and the staff actually gave me solid advice about where to find spots that won’t cost you a fortune. What really sealed the deal for me was the little details that show someone actually thinks about what travelers need – proper hangers in the closet, enough outlets near the bed, a shower with decent water pressure. The 9.5 rating makes total sense once you’re there; it’s not flashy or trying too hard, just genuinely comfortable and well-run. I mean, three stars might sound modest, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want – a place that focuses on getting the basics absolutely right instead of loading you up with amenities you’ll never use.
