— The hotel
Compact & Central Old Town Studio
Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of Riga’s Old Town places, and honestly, most of them either cost a fortune or feel like you’re sleeping in a medieval dungeon. This little studio on Pasta iela is different though – it’s tucked away on this quiet residential street that most tourists never find, but you’re literally a three-minute walk from the main cathedral square. I mean, you can hear the church bells in the morning, but not the drunk bachelor parties stumbling around at 2 AM.
The space itself is small (they’re not lying about the “compact” part), but whoever designed it actually gets how people live. The kitchen area has everything you need – proper coffee maker, not some terrible instant thing, and the fridge is actually big enough for more than just a sad sandwich. The bed pulls out from what looks like a really sleek wall unit, and honestly, it’s more comfortable than half the “luxury” hotels I’ve tried in the city center. There’s this great little window that looks out onto the courtyard, and in the mornings you’ll see the old ladies from the neighboring apartments hanging their laundry and chatting in rapid-fire Latvian. It’s that authentic neighborhood vibe you can’t get on the main tourist strips.
What really sold me on this place though – and why I keep coming back when I’m in Riga – is the location knowledge you get from staying here. You’re on the border between Old Town and the newer districts, so you can walk to Doma laukums for your tourist photos, but also discover places like that incredible little bakery on Audēju iela that locals line up at every morning. The apartment building itself is one of those beautiful Art Nouveau places that Riga is famous for, with the original wooden staircase that creaks just enough to feel historic but not enough to annoy you. Parking is actually possible in this area too, unlike deeper in Old Town where you’re basically screwed if you have a car. The host leaves you alone but responds instantly when you need something – that perfect balance that’s surprisingly hard to find. For the price point, especially with that 9.5 rating that’s completely deserved, you’re getting way more character and comfort than those generic chain places near the train station.
