You know what caught me off guard about Cat Garden Deluxe Apartments? The name actually makes sense once you’re there – there’s this lovely little courtyard garden area, and yeah, I spotted a few neighborhood cats lounging around like they owned the place. It’s tucked away on Madonas iela, which honestly feels refreshingly quiet compared to the tourist-heavy streets closer to Old Town. The building itself has that solid Soviet-era bones thing going on, but they’ve done a really nice job updating the interiors without going overboard with the renovation.

The apartments themselves are properly spacious – I mean, you can actually unpack your suitcase and not trip over it, which is more than I can say for most European city stays. The kitchenette situation is legit too, with a full-size fridge and decent stovetop, so you can actually cook if you want to save some euros or just can’t face another restaurant meal. The Wi-Fi works well (tested it extensively while working from the little dining table), and the heating is solid – important in Riga, trust me. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night; Madonas iela doesn’t get much through traffic, so you’re not dealing with cars and trams rumbling by at all hours like you would closer to the center.

Getting around is actually pretty straightforward from here – there’s a tram stop maybe a five-minute walk away that’ll get you to the heart of things, and if you’re feeling ambitious, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the old medieval stuff that everyone comes to see. The neighborhood itself has this lived-in feel that I really liked; there’s a decent grocery store nearby (Rimi, I think?), and you’ll see actual Rigans going about their daily business rather than just tourists with cameras. The staff at check-in were refreshingly normal – helpful but not overly chatty, which suited me fine. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving, but honestly, that’s pretty much anywhere in Riga these days. For a 3-star place, it punches above its weight in terms of space and comfort, and that 8.6 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it does everything well and leaves you feeling like you got good value for your money.
