Barn Street Home, Old Riga 1BR
You know what really surprised me about Barn Street Home? The name totally undersells it. I mean, you’re basically staying in the heart of Old Riga’s medieval quarter, and “barn street” makes it sound like you’re out in the countryside somewhere. But honestly, once you find Šķūņu iela 13 – and it took me a solid ten minutes of wandering around with my phone map because these old streets don’t exactly follow a grid – you realize you’ve hit the jackpot location-wise.
The apartment itself is pretty much what you’d expect from a well-maintained 3-star place, but it’s those little details that make it work. The 1BR setup is actually quite clever – they’ve managed to squeeze in a proper living area without making everything feel cramped, which is no small feat in a building that’s probably been around since before America was even a thought. The windows face the street, so you get this lovely view of the cobblestones and old facades, though I’ll be honest, if you’re a light sleeper, you might want to pack earplugs. Those stones make every footstep echo, especially when the pub crowds are heading home around 2 AM on weekends.
What really makes this place shine is how walkable everything is from here. You’re literally a three-minute stroll from the Town Hall Square – I timed it because I’m weird like that – and maybe five minutes from all the main cathedral action. The grocery store on the corner (tiny place, but they have everything you need) stays open until 10 PM, which saved me when I realized I’d forgotten toothpaste. And here’s something the booking sites don’t tell you: there’s this little café about two doors down that does incredible coffee and pastries for breakfast, run by this older Latvian woman who’ll chat your ear off in surprisingly good English if you let her. The check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that awkward “meet me at this random corner” nonsense you sometimes get with apartment rentals. They actually have a proper system set up, and the host responded to my messages within minutes when I had questions about the Wi-Fi password.
I stayed here in late September, so I can’t speak to summer crowds, but the whole area had this perfect lived-in feeling – busy enough to feel vibrant, quiet enough to actually sleep. The heating worked great (important in Latvia, trust me), and while the bathroom is compact, it’s well-designed and the water pressure is honestly better than half the fancy hotels I’ve stayed in. The 8.7 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be luxury, but it delivers exactly what it promises, and the location alone makes it worth booking again.
