Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw the address on Republikas Laukums, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name basically translates to “Apartments in Old Riga near the Daugava River,” which sounds pretty generic, but actually this place surprised me in the best way possible. The building sits right on Republic Square, and I mean right there – you can practically roll out of bed and stumble into the heart of Old Town’s cobblestone maze. What really got me though was stepping onto the balcony (if you get one of those units) and seeing the Daugava flowing past. There’s something about watching those tour boats chug by in the morning while you’re having coffee that just hits different, you know?

The apartments themselves are honestly better than I expected for a 3-star place. I mean, sure, they’re not luxury or anything, but whoever set these up actually thought about how people live. The kitchenette had proper dishes – not just random mismatched stuff – and the Wi-Fi didn’t cut out every five minutes like some places I’ve stayed. The beds are decent too, though if you’re a light sleeper, just know that Republikas Laukums can get a bit lively on weekend nights. Nothing crazy, but you’ll hear people walking back from the bars in Vecrīga. I actually kind of liked it – reminded me I was staying somewhere with actual life happening around it.

What really makes this spot work is the location, but not in that generic “convenient location” way everyone talks about. I’m talking about being able to walk to Māra Dārzi (Mother’s Garden) in literally three minutes when you need groceries, or hitting up that little coffee place on Audēju iela before the tour groups figure out it exists. The Cathedral and all the postcard stuff is obviously right there, but honestly? Some of my favorite moments were just wandering down to the riverbank early in the morning when it’s still quiet, watching the city wake up. Oh, and if you’re driving – good luck with parking on the square itself, but there’s a decent-sized lot about a block away that won’t completely destroy your budget. The 9.4 rating makes sense to me because this place does what it promises without any fancy nonsense. It’s clean, it’s comfortable, and you’re staying in one of the most beautiful old cities in Europe without paying hotel prices. Just don’t expect room service or someone to carry your bags – this is apartment living, which honestly feels more real anyway.
